Grid and Energy System Planning

Grid and Energy System Planning

Grid and Energy System Planning

Holistic energy system plans are the central driver in maintaining a reliable energy system and integrating renewables. Generation expansion plans and grid investments must be aligned to reduce distribution losses, prevent outages, maintain asset health, and bolster potential to integrate renewable energy sources and charging facilities for electric vehicles.

NTCS Energy guides planning and leadership teams throughout the entire process of planning and realising their energy system of the future, utilising innovative data-driven approaches. We believe energy system planning is an important in-house capability that should involve the effort of the grid operator, government, and regulator. Our experts guide planning and leadership teams throughout the entire cycle of planning the energy system of the future.

Our approach

  1. Methodology Development

We start by identifying current challenges and goals based on discussions with the leadership team. We develop a tailored methodology to analyse the identified challenges. In the analysis methodology, we determine what will be calculated, what assumptions must be made, and which software tools will be used.

  2. Data Collection and Processing

Next, we localise data on the energy system within the company, including topology, load data, equipment specifications, and historical fault records. We pay attention to the interpretation of collected data. Software solutions and their analytics functionalities tend to be perceived as a source of truth. However, these software solutions follow the same rule as any analytical tool: “garbage in is garbage out”. The quality of the input data determines the quality of the strategic decisions.

Together with important internal and external stakeholders, we develop future scenarios during interactive workshops. These scenarios include assumptions regarding load growth, renewable energy growth, and other developments in the sector. Because these scenarios are connected to various national policies and the investment plans of various commercial parties, the involvement of stakeholders, such as governments and energy system actors, is critical to developing well-founded scenarios.

  3. Execution and Reporting

During the execution phase, we divide study activities between the planning team and a multidisciplinary team of NTCS consultants. The teams develop a comprehensive report and dashboards detailing the outcomes of the analysis. Together with the planning team, we prepare a presentation for the leadership team to translate outcomes of the study to comprehensive investment decision-supporting information.

  4. Capability Development

During the last phase, we assess capabilities related to data processing, power flow analysis, and reporting within the team and develop a growth path for the planning team. To support the growth path, we provide tailored training programs. We believe system planning is an essential in-house capability and a continuously ongoing process. With our experts’ support your organisation is able to navigate through the rapidly changing energy landscape, utilising data and planning best practices.
